The National Football League went to 4 divisions per conference in 2002 (my first year as GM of the Denver Broncos) and though we’re now over a decade separated from the 4X4 format, some rivalries still run deep. The Seattle Seahawks face old AFC West foe Denver at CenturyLink Stadium and the Arizona/St. Louis Cardinals take on the Dallas Cowboys at University of Phoenix stadium. Shades of Jim Hart vs Roger Staubach? Probably not, but there’s still no love lost between the two one time divisional rivals.
That disdain has carried on for some fans and Mike Burke of TheLandryHat.com makes no bones about his own, dare I say “hatred” for the desert birds. Here’s his take on the Cowboys and their third preseason game in Week 2. Wait, how’d they do that?
Trivia question – How many years did QB Jim Hart play and for what teams? No fair peeking!
Dallas Cowboys Week 3 Preseason Tilt

It is rare to find someone who hates a football team that is a doormat franchise, but in this Dallas Cowboys fan you’ve got one who hates the Arizona Cardinals. In fact, I think you’d be hard pressed to find many football fans who hate the Cardinals more than I do. I have a very selfish reason for this dislike. I live in the state of Arizona and that means the idiots who program the TV listings here force the Cardinals games on me every single week. Worse, they make sure that no other game is on the opposite channel. If you live in the state of Arizona you are going to see the Cardinals games regardless. That much bad football will sicken anyone on them.
It wasn’t always like that. It used to be that the black out rule saved you. The Cardinals were so awful that they didn’t sell out their games. Except when the Cowboys came to town. I rarely cared about that though because I was usually at the games live. But when Kurt Warner started making the Cardinals popular here they suddenly sold out games. Sell outs gave them the ammunition to get their new stadium, and the ticket prices to go see my Cowboys nearly tripled. The Cardinals were the first team to try to capitalize on the Cowboys popularity by forcing you to buy not a single game ticket for the Cowboys, but they’d throw in a game against a team you couldn’t give two squirts about.
Hence, I just hate them. Every season when the new schedule comes out, one of the first things I do is try to see which of the Cowboys games are going to be at the same kickoff time as the Cardinals games. Then I want to see if they are on opposite networks by any stroke of luck. Usually I only have 3 or 4 games a year pre-empted by the Cardinals brand of sucking football. For that reason, it has never been financially wise for me to buy Sunday Ticket. I can’t really justify the overall cost for so few games.
