Quite simply, Year 3 is the most common year for safeties to peak.
The norm for Safeties is Year 3. Here are some of the most recognizable names that peaked in Year 3.
The Norm – Safeties Who Peaked in Year Three of Their Career
|Atari Bigby||Tanard Jackson|
|Sean Jones||Josh Bullocks|
|Renaldo Hill||Chris Harris|
|Ed Reed||Jairus Byrd|
|Dashon Goldson||Brandon Meriweather|
These ten safeties peaked as rookies. Their on-field productivity never again matched what they accomplished in their rookie seasons.
Rookie Peaks – Safeties Who Peaked in Year One of Their Career
|Mike Doss||Gerald Alexander|
|Dexter Reid||Chad Williams|
|Jerome Carter||Madieu Williams|
|Ko Simpson||Erik Coleman|
|Roy Williams||Travis Daniels|
These ten safeties represent another set of outliers – those who had their peak season after Year 6 of their career.
Late-Peakers – Safeties Who Peaked After Year 6 of Their Career
|Malcolm Jenkins (7)||Roman Harper (7)|
|Tebucky Jones (7)||Donovin Darius (7)|
|Dwight Lowery (8)||Quintin Mikell (8)|
|Antrel Rolle (9)||Mike Adams (11)|
|Ryan Clark (11)||Charles Woodson (12)|
These ten big-name safeties seem to have their best season not only behind them, but they achieved it in the first three years. The prediction isn’t that they’re in terminal decline, but based on the odds and how prolific their peak season was (in parentheses), it’s highly unlikely that their career year is ahead.
Big Names Who Seem to Have Peaked in First Two Years
|Louis Delmas (2)||Patrick Chung (2)|
|Glover Quin (2)||Kam Chancellor (2)|
|Troy Polamalu (2)||Eugene Wilson (2)|
|Marlon McCree (2)||Anthony Smith (2)|
|Deon Grant (2)||Dwaine Carpenter (2)|
These ten players didn’t qualify for the study as they’re in the 2011 or later classes. However, they do have three years of productivity. Based on their career trajectory thus far, it appears their best season (in parentheses) might be in the rearview mirror.
Current Players Who Seem to Have Peaked in First Three Years

|George Iloka (3)||Kemal Ishmael (2)|
|Rahim Moore (2)||T.J. McDonald (2)|

Based on career trajectories, these ten ends seem as though their best season is ahead of them in the next 1-3 years.
